Dimitris Kamarotos (Greece 1954). Studied music and
computers in Athens and continued composition, clarinet and electronic music
in Paris with D.Charles, M.Battier, I. Xenakis and H. Vaggione. He was
invited composer at IRCAM (1983). Since 1986 worked as research manager in
many projects in collaboration with the Athens Polytechnic School, UOA
(Athens Univ.), Aristotle Univ of Thessaloniki, CCMR (Center for
Contemporary Music Research). He worked as research manager of the CCMA –
KSYME (founded by I. Xenakis) from 1985 to 1994. He collaborated with Brad
Garton and Thanassis Rikakis (Columbia Univ.), Perry Cook (Princeton Univ.)
in the foundation of the computer music studio in CCMR (Athens) and the IPSA
(Institute for Music and Psychoacoustics of the Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki). He has particularly worked and published papers on the
creation of physically modelled ancient instruments (prehistoric “Sesclo
aulos”), and actually continuing (since 1997) the research project on
automated retrieval of music patterns as raw data (in Athens Univ.) and
timbre recognition (in the National Technical Univ.).
He is founder and director of many music
ensemble projects aiming to the boundary between contemporary, free
improvised and electroacoustic music (“Pros” Ensemble 1984, “A_music”
Ensemble 1988, “Intermediary Space” 1991, “Five froyd and Two” 1998),
“Electric Breath” (2002).
He is combining the techniques of traditional
wind instruments (clarinet, Bass-clarinet) with modern electronic
instrumental control to create meta-instruments that respond directly to the
human decision during live playing. He is co-founder and music performer of
the “ODC Ensemble” (toured in Cairo, Edinburgh, Alexandria and Athens). Also
founding member of the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association
(HELMCA) where he also served as president.
He is working in the use of the interactive sound control and real
time generation techniques used in the theatrical performance as well with
the function of “choros” both in the ancient drama and modern theater. He
collaborated many times with the National Theater as with progressive
theater groups, mainly with the “Diplous Eros Theater Ensemble” and the
“Theseum Ensemble”. He is resident composer in the “Theseion – A Theatre for
the Arts” and continuously collaborating with director Michael Marmarinos,
since 1990. He composed and directed music in many modern performances of
the Ancient Greek Drama, performed in the Epidaurus Theater and
international festivals («Oedipus Rex» created for the inaugural performance
in the Rome Coliseum and world tour, “Electra”, “Medea”, “Ajax”). Some of
his recent works are: music for the “National Hymn” and “Romeo and Juliet” (both
directed by M. Marmarinos). Some of his music is released in the CD’s :
“Goodbye Stories”, (1997), “Ivanov”, (1998), “OpheliAct”(1999), “Oed”
(2000), “Fuge” (2001), “Good quality memories at a price you can afford”
(2002), “Three Sisters (2004)”.
