He was born in Volos, Greece,
in 1965, and he studied Physics in the
University of Thessaloniki. His musical activity started becoming known
in 1984 with the formation of the group Optical Musics, a free-form
group melting together elements of free improvisation and
electroacoustic experimentation. Although the activities of the "group"
were many times interrupted, it managed to release two albums, and to
appear in a small number of live performances, with strong theatrical
and visual elements. Since 1998, when Optical Musics definitely split,
Costis Drygianakis follows his own career. Besides discography, he has
also made music for theatre performances and for documentary films. The
last years he also works as staff writer for the Greek music magazine
Difono.
The music of Costis Drygianakis, usually assembled with the help of
recording media (tapes, computers etc) belongs to the gerne of
electroacoustic music, avoiding generally the dogmatic limitations.
Frequently using unorthodox relationships of composition - performance -
recomposition, it utilises and tames randomness and improvisation,
finding balances between ambience and surprise, referring but not
coinciding and searching but never abandoning its sentimental space.
